Three types of Chrysanthemum featured in this painting by Su-sing Chow in his book Fundamentals of Chinese Flower Painting: Vol. 4 Book of the Chrysanthemum.
We especially love the technique of depicting dramatic contrast between the front side and back side of the petals on the red Chrysanthemum.
Chrysanthemum is one of the four basic subjects in Chinese painting referred to as the "Four Gentlemen." Students are encouraged to practice the Four Gentlemen (Orchid, Bamboo, Chrysanthemum, and Plum) to practice the essential techniques that can be used to depict all other subjects. Chrysanthemum is the "Gentleman of Autumn," symbolizing happiness, vitality and wealth.
