Little Treasures
During
the Eastern Han Dynasty, a peasant girl was taken from her family to be the
emperor’s concubine. Separated from her family and her true love, she
was forced to serve the emperor. Over time she became the emperor’s favorite
as he mistook her sorrow and longing for obedience and devotion.
Everyday, she would walk outside the palace to a nearby lake. On the shore
she would stare at her reflection on the water and try to picture herself back
with her true love and her family. As she wept, her tears hit the lake like
rain drops. The lake was ruled by a benevolent dragon. The dragon took pity
on the peasant girl and fashioned her tears into tiny, beautiful treasures.
As each one took shape the delightful treasures eased the peasant girl’s
sorrow.
Soon there was a peasant revolt led by the girl’s true love. The revolt
freed her from the Emperor’s service. Reunited with her true love, the
peasant girl brought her true love to the dragon’s lake to see the tiny
treasures fashioned out of her tears for her lost love.
